What is the buzz on the movie Oppenheimer? Who is J.. Robert Oppenheimer?

The movie Oppenheimer, is directed by Christopher Nolan based on the real life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Robert Oppenheimer was a theoretical physicist, who worked on the Manhattan Project. During the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer was director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and responsible for the research and design of an atomic bomb

 

Oppenheimer is known as the Father of Atomic Bomb. He is famous because he spearheaded the project to create nuclear weapons which came to fruition during World War 2. On July 16,1945 he witnessed the successful trinity test (codename for first detonation of atomic bomb) at Alamogordo, New Mexico. 

 

His first words reportedly were: “I guess it worked.” He later famously recalled that the history-defining moment had brought to mind words from a sacred Hindu text:

“We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, ‘Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds’. I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.”

Less than a month later, America dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, effectively bringing an end to the Second World War.

People are eagerly waiting to watch the biopic of Robert Oppenheimer. I guess I’m one of them as well…I want to watch it as well as soon as possible.

～J.ロバート・オッペンハイマーって誰？～

映画『オッペンハイマー』は、「J・ロバート・オッペンハイマー」の実話をもとにクリストファー・ノーランが監督した映画です。

ロバート・オッペンハイマーはマンハッタン計画（ナチス・ドイツの原子爆弾開発に焦ったアメリカ、イギリス、カナダが原子爆弾開発・製造のために科学者・技術者を総動員した計画）に携わった理論物理学者です。

マンハッタン計画中、オッペンハイマーはロスアラモス研究所の所長を務め、原子爆弾の研究と設計を担当していました。

オッペンハイマーは原爆の父として知られている人物です。彼が有名なのは、第2次世界大戦中に結実した核兵器製造プロジェクトの陣頭指揮を執ったからです。1945年7月16日、彼はニューメキシコ州アラモゴードでの三位一体実験（原子爆弾の初爆発のコードネーム）の成功に立ち会いました。

実験後、彼の第一声はこうだったと伝えられています： 「うまくいったようだ」。

のちに彼は、この歴史を決定づけた瞬間、ヒンズー教の聖典の言葉が頭に浮かんだと述懐しています：
「私たちは世界が同じでなくなることを知っていた。数人が笑い、数人が泣いた。ほとんどの人は黙っていた。私はヒンズー教の聖典『バガヴァッド・ギーター』の一節、『今、私は死となり、世界の破壊者となる』を思い出した。いずれにせよ、私たちは皆、そう考えていたのだろう。」

それから1ヵ月も経たないうちに、アメリカは日本の広島と長崎に2発の原爆を投下し、事実上、第二次世界大戦に終止符を打ちました。

人々はロバート・オッペンハイマーの伝記映画を待ち望んでいます。私もその一人なのだろう…
一刻も早く観たいです。
