My last summer break as a student

Last month, I had the chance to take part in the 54th International Understanding Seminar for High School Students—this was the 3^rd year I joined it. It was held over 3 days and 2 nights during summer break, organized by the Chiba High School Association for International Education. Although it was my third time joining, this year felt extra special. After a 2-year break because of COVID, 2 years it was held within 1 day, this year, the seminar was finally back to its full length, which made it all the more exciting.

The event brought together international students like me, along with Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs), to share bits and pieces of our countries like cuisine, traditional customs, festivals and even our hobbies or interests …The main activities were split into two parts. First, the students were divided into groups, and each group got to attend lectures given by  the guest speakers. Then, they teamed up to prepare and present what they had learned. Seeing the students evolve from quiet and shy on the first day to confidently presenting in front of their peers, teachers, and guests was just incredible.

I’ve been part of other cultural exchange events before, but this seminar always leaves me with a special feeling. Maybe it’s the way these high school students start off so timid and gradually open up, becoming more curious and eager to learn. By the time they step up to present, they’re bursting with excitement and energy. It’s really heartwarming to watch them embrace new cultures with such pure curiosity.

This was our group after they finished their presentation. This time I presented about the Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival (known as Children Festival). On their hands are simple version paper lanterns which we usually make for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

This time what stood out to me was how well-behaved and independent these kids were. We stayed at a huge dorm in a park with students and teachers coming from different events, about 200 students in total from elementary school to high school. Everything was self-service, meaning they had to clean their own rooms, return bed covers, serve their own food, and clean up after meals. I was amazed at how smoothly everything ran! No chaos, no loud cries, just kids being organized, neat, and respectful. It was so impressive to see.

This year was my last summer break so this was also my last time to be able to join this seminar. For sure, this seminar will definitely remain one of the highlights in my student life here. The connections made, the cultural exchanges, and witnessing the growth of these students are memories I’ll hold onto for a long time. In a world that often feels divided, experiences like this remind me of the importance of learning from each other and appreciating different cultures. That’s something we adults can help foster for future generations. It’s a beautiful thing, and I’m grateful I got to be a part of it.

大学生最後の夏休み：忘れられない

先月、私は第54回高校生のための国際理解セミナーに参加する機会がありました。これで3回目の参加となります。このセミナーは夏休み中の3日間2泊で行われ、千葉県高等学校国際教育協会が主催しています。3回目の参加にもかかわらず、今年は特に特別なものに感じました。コロナ禍で2年間休止され、その後2年間は1日だけの開催となっていましたが、今年はついに従来の3日間の形式に戻り、より一層ワクワクするものとなりました。

このイベントには、私のような留学生やALT（外国語指導助手）が集まり、それぞれの国の料理や伝統、祭り、さらには趣味や関心ごとなどを紹介しました。主な活動は2つのパートに分かれていて、最初に生徒たちはグループごとに分けられ、招待講師の講演を聞きます。その後、チームを組んで学んだことをまとめ、発表を準備します。生徒たちが、最初は静かで恥ずかしそうだったのに、次第に自信を持って同級生や先生、そしてゲストの前で堂々と発表する姿に成長していく様子は本当に素晴らしいものです。

ほかの文化交流イベントにも参加したことがありますが、このセミナーはいつも特別な感動を与えてくれます。たぶん、最初はおとなしくて内気な高校生たちが、徐々に好奇心旺盛になり、新しいことを学びたがる様子が心に残るのかもしれません。発表の場になると、彼らはエネルギーと興奮に満ち溢れています。純粋な好奇心で新しい文化に触れる姿を見るのは、本当に心温まるものです。

今回、特に印象に残ったのは、生徒たちの礼儀正しさと自立心でした。私たちは大きな公園の中にある寮に泊まり、そこには他のイベントに参加している生徒や先生も一緒に、小学生から高校生まで合計で約200人が集まりました。すべてがセルフサービスで行われ、部屋の掃除、ベッドカバーの返却、食事の配膳、食後の片付けまで、生徒たちが自分たちで行っていました。すべてがスムーズに進んでいて、本当に驚きました。混乱も大声もなく、整理整頓され、礼儀正しい生徒たちの姿に感動しました。

今年は私にとって最後の夏休みであり、このセミナーに参加できる最後の機会でもありました。このセミナーは、私の学生生活におけるハイライトのひとつとして、間違いなく記憶に残るでしょう。築いたつながりや文化交流、そして生徒たちの成長を目の当たりにできたことは、長く心に残る思い出です。しばしば分断されがちなこの世界で、お互いに学び合い、異なる文化を尊重することの大切さを再認識させてくれる体験でした。これは、大人として次の世代に伝えるべき大切なことです。こういった美しい経験に参加できたことに、心から感謝しています。
